Form, content and assessment of the examination

The entrance examination consists of two main rounds.

An entrance panel will assess the performance in the first round with a “pass/fail”. If you pass the 1st round you will continue to the 2nd round that will take place as soon as possible after the 1st round. The two rounds may take place on different days.

The first round of the entrance examination consists of conducting and correcting a proposed string quartet + piano in a proposed orchestral movement (e.g. Beethoven, 1st Symphony, 1st Movement). The applicant will be notified of the proposed orchestral movement 2 weeks in advance of the entrance exam. The entrance exam will be assessed by the teacher of the main subject of conducting, an internal and an external censor. The proposed orchestral movement will be the same in the 1st and 2nd round for those applicants who pass the first round.
Duration: 10 - 15 mins.

The second round of the entrance examination consists of three tests:

1. Orchestra conducting

  • The applicant is to rehearse and conduct a provided orchestra in an orchestral movement - e.g. Haydn: Symphony No. 104. The applicant must submit three rehearsed pieces of which the examiners select one. The applicant will be notified 2 weeks in advance. The rehearsed pieces have to be for a standard symphony orchestra (max. 3333-4331-timp-perc-hrp-str)
  • Conducting and correction of a proposed task: An excerpt from an orchestral piece - e.g. Grieg: Piano concerto, 2nd movement. The applicant will be notified 2 weeks in advance.

Duration: 20-30 min.
The entrance examination is censured by the teacher of the main subject of orchestral conducting, an internal examiner and an external examiner. One grade is awarded according to the 7-point grading scale.

Normally, only applicants who are awarded the grades 10 or 12 in orchestra conducting test will continue to the ear training test and the conversation.

2. Ear training

Oral examination, duration: 20 min.

Rhythm

  • Prima vista execution of one rhythmic task containing polyrhythmical elements and varying time.
  • Prima vista execution of one 2 part combination assignement, where the applicant sings the upper part and claps the lower part.

Melody

  • Sight singing of a accompanied song.

Sight reading

  • Seconda vista execution of a 2 part assignment with one part written in alto or tenor clef or transposed to B, A or F.

Written test

One grade is awarded according to the 7-point grading scale.

3. Discussion

The discussion is based on both the three works submitted by the applicant for the audition in orchestral conducting and the proposed task.

The purpose of the examination/discussion is to uncover the applicant’s knowledge, skills and qualifications related to the works from different angles: e.g. conducting technique, instrumentation, music history, music theory, ability to play the piano, ability to sing different voices, and the applicant's repertoire knowledge, motivation and other musical activities.

The entrance examination is censured by the teacher of the main subject of orchestral conducting, a music theory/music history/form analysis teacher, an instrumentation teacher, an internal and an external censor.

One grade is awarded according to the 7-point grading scale.

Duration: 1 hour.
