Christian Westergaard is a Copenhagen based collaborative pianist, with a special interest for historical pianos and Historicaly Informed Performance Practise. He works with leading Danish and Scandinavian singers, including Elsa Dreisig, Mari Eriksmoen, Inger Dam Jensen, Bo Skovhus and many more. He has performed in venues such as Wigmore Hall, Musikhalle, Hamborg and is a recording artist for Dacapo Records. He was educated at The Royal Danish Academy of Music, Copenhagen. His upcoming projects include the complete art songs of Peter Heise and Herman D. Koppel for Dacapo Records, recitals with Elsa Dreisig and Mari Eriksmoen, the publication of the collected songs of Herman D. Koppel on Edition S and the Artistic Research Project ”From specialized to common practise – Historically Informed Performance Pratice in Modern Performance Practice”.
In 2015 he was the winner of International Lied Duo Competition together with Dutch mezzo soprano Francine Vis. He held a teaching position in The Danish National Conservatory of Music in Odense 2010-1018 and has been holding a teaching position at The Royal Danish Academy of Music, Copenhagen and The Royal Danish Opera Academy, Copenhagen since 2006 where his fields currently include solo vocal coaching, vocal/opera ensemble coaching, repertoire classes within art song genres and baroque opera and oratorio, musical coaching of opera projects as well as being one of the prominent teachers of collaborative piano studies and vocal coaching for conductors. In 2020 he took up a position as Assistant Professor with special attention to the Artistic Research Project ”From specialized to common practise – Historically Informed Performance Pratice in Modern Performance Practice in collaboration with assistant professor Toke Møldrup.
He has a vast performing repertoire within art song, especially German and Scandinavian repertoire and has done several master classes for voice and piano duos in this repertoire. He has been associated as pianist with the choirs of The Danish Broadcasting Association (Danmarks Radio) for many years. He also has a keen interest in the Danish piano repertoire and has released the critically acclaimed cd 'Tangos, waltzes and cinema music" with piano music by Jacob Gade (Dacapo Records) and a cd with art songs by Danish composer Ib Nørholm.
